Eye emergencies can happen any time, anywhere, to anyone. Being prepared can save your eyes and vision from permanent damage.
At Northern Lights Eyecare, we can treat eye emergencies of any kind. Please call us right away if you experience an eye injury, accident, or concern.
Is It an Emergency?
You should seek immediate eye care if you experience:
- Sudden partial or full vision loss
- Yellow/green discharge
- Extreme swelling
- Eye pain
- Sudden blurry vision
- Sudden flashes or floaters
- Glare or halos around lights
- Dark spots/holes in your vision
If you think you’re experiencing an eye care emergency, please contact us or call 911 to get immediate medical attention.
Basic First-Aid for Your Eyes
While you’re waiting for medical assistance, you can perform some basic first-aid to protect your eyes from further damage.
Surface Scratch
Corneal abrasions, or scratches on the front of your eye, can lead to infection or permanent damage if not properly treated.
If you’ve scratched your eye, flush your eye out with clean water to ensure nothing is caught in the eye tissue. While you seek medical attention, be sure to avoid rubbing your eye, as that could make the injury worse.
Foreign Object
If a foreign object, like an eyelash or a fleck of makeup, is stuck to your eye, try flushing it out with clean water. If an object is embedded in your eye tissue, seek medical attention right away. Avoid rubbing your eyes to prevent further damage.
Never use tweezers or any other kind of tool to remove something from your eye.
Chemical Contact
If any kind of chemicals have entered your eyes, immediately flush your eyes with clean water for at least 15 minutes (even if your eyes “feel fine”). Seek medical attention right away once you’ve finished flushing your eyes.
