Do I Have Dry Eye Disease?
Many people can experience dry eye symptoms, but how do you know if you have dry eye disease? The symptoms of dry eye disease can include:
- Blurred vision
- Light sensitivity
- Frequent tearing
- Eye redness/fatigue
- Foreign body sensation
- A stinging/burning sensation
- Difficulty with nighttime driving
- Difficulty wearing contact lenses
- Stringy mucus in/around your eyes
There are 2 types of dry eye; aqueous deficiency and evaporative.
Aqueous Deficiency Dry Eye
Aqueous deficiency dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough tears to stay hydrated. It’s often a natural part of aging, or a symptom of a separate condition like Sjorgren’s syndrome.
Evaporative Dry Eye
Evaporative dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t produce enough oil (or oil is trapped in the meibomian glands) to prevent your tears from evaporating too quickly. This prevents your eyes from remaining properly lubricated.
Our Treatments
Artificial Tears
Artificial tears and medicated eye drops can help alleviate dry eye symptoms by reducing inflammation and ocular surface damage caused by dry eye. These drops can provide lasting relief that protects your eyes.
Artificial tears can be used day and night with most contact lenses. Your optometrist can prescribe medicated drops if it’s a good fit for your needs and ocular health.
Bruder Masks
The Bruder Moist Heat Eye Compress Mask is a warm compress that helps clear your eyes’ oil glands to allow new, natural oils to flow back onto the eye and alleviate discomfort caused by dry eye. Easy-to-use and effective, the bruder mask can be prescribed by your optometrist for dry eye. To use, microwave for 20 seconds and apply for 10 minutes or as prescribed.
This warm compress mask helps to stabilize the tear film, improve gland function, and slow tear evaporation.
Omega 3 Supplements
Dry eye can be associated with certain diet deficiencies. With additional supplements and vitamins, you can help prevent and treat dry eye symptoms. Your optometrist can discuss these options with you.
